Nicklas Bendtner, who bagged a brace last time out, has been on first team duty, so Jay Simpson was handed a start alongside hat-trick hero Carlos Vela.

Amaury Bischoff and Rui Fonte made the bench for the first time in their Arsenal careers, Henri Lansbury as also included for the tasty encounter at a packed Emirates.

Fabianski (c)
Hoyte - Song - Djourou - Gibbs
Wilshere - Randall - Ramsey - Merida
Simpson - Vela

Subs - Mannone - Ogogo - Frimpong - Coquelin - Lansbury - Bischoff - Fonte

Arsenal began nervously against a physical Wigan, who showed they were willing to follow Sheffield United’s example by flexing their power against the youngsters.

However, they had not banked on the Gunners snapping back. Wilshere’s clip on the heels of Palacios brought a stern talking to in the opening stages. Eventually the familiar flow was found, but with two
solid banks of four, the inventive Randall and Wilshere struggled to find gaps.

Wigan would be stirred, and come back fighting. Koumas’ cross field ball exposed Gibbs, De Ridder profited, forcing Song to bullet the cross over his own bar. Fabianski’s flap at the delivery would have unsettled
the inexperienced back four, although his brave save from Zaki quickly restored confidence.

On 12 minutes Arsenal would have Wigan rocking. A defence splitting ball from Merida sent Vela through 1-1, he tried to clever up against Kirkland, and saw the ball poked away with flying hand. The re-bound
was picked up again by Vela, his pass to Ramsey saw the Welshman’s shot blocked, before Wilshere poked Simpson in. The former Reserves skipper showed good ball possession, he then unleashed a powerful drive which smashed off the bar.

If that wasn’t close enough, Merida and Gibbs took out Boyce, Kieran strode into the box with pace, but with Simpson waiting for the square pass, he teed up a curling left foot effort which had Kirkland scrambling, and Simpson furious.

Up the other end De Ridder worked Fabianski with a firm drive, the crowd were certainly getting their money’s worth.

Back came the visitors once more, with Djourou needing to throw his body in the way to stop De Ridder’s cross. The move came after a lazy pass from Randall, a real wake up call for the usually reliable pass-master.

Wilshere would then have the fans on their feet after jinking run beyond four Wigan players in a tight area, his release ball to Vela won a dangerous looking free-kick. Ramsey stepped up, and from all of 35 yards had Kirkland scrambling to palm it away.

The only answer The Latics had to Arsenal’s slick movement and passing was fouling, yet even that was letting them down as the referee gave advantage after a trip on Merida, Ramsey took over, and Simpson had
his drive blocked.

Jay turned provider for the next chance, this time Vela with a 20-yard curler to win his side a corner. The barrage of shots had taken it’s toll on Kirkland, after just 25 minutes he was complaining of injuries to both knee and shoulder.

Fabianski was again called on after Koumas volleyed Song’s missed placed header from the left side of the box, but the Polish stopper appeared more than comfortable with the drive. Comfortable he wasn’t when De Ridder put Zaki through, however another brave save ended the danger.

Valencia won a corner of Gibbs, and despite Merida’s clearance, another was given when Lukasz handled Boyce’s return. Simpson worked hard to latch onto a danger ending ball from Ramsey, but he quickly found he had nowhere to go with the committed Titus Bramble keeping close.

The nature of the coaches in the technical area showed the way the game was going. Arsene Wenger appeared relaxed and confident when shown talking to Pat Rice, whilst in contrast Steve Bruce was dishing out instructions to his frustrated outfit.

Gibbs was becoming quite exposed as the half went on, shown again when Boyce and De Ridder doubled up and provided a deep cross for Zaki, the loanee couldn’t keep it down.

Simpson took the kicks to win a corner, Wilshere’s delivery demanded a volley from the unmarked Djourou, but he looked stunned when presented the chance to hand his team the lead.

The wave of pressure seemed to be stemmed as the break approached, but the inventive Wilshere whipped a cross field ball for Gibbs, who proceeded to burst past three Wigan players to win a corner. Merida earned
a second in quick succession with a right footed shot from inside the box, as the hosts pushed hard.

De Ridder had a rare shot which Fabianski saved, and that was the final straw. Wigan had been given all the chances they were going to get to go in front and had not taken them. The Gunners punished it. Wilshere’s intelligent ball through the middle was meant for Vela, Simpson gambled and took it himself, and as Kirkland advanced, Jay slipped it under him to send the Emirates into chaos.

Goal - Jay Simpson - (42)

Half Time - Arsenal 1-0 Wigan

Arsenal showed a more mature approach as the second period began, keeping possession among themselves and waiting for Wigan’s response.

The more relaxed attitude was nearly undoing the hard work, as Djourou could have given away a penalty with a clumsy hand ball, Zaki nearly punished it with a low shot moments later. Merida hit back with adragged drive, but there was little to separate the two on the basis of the second half.

Wenger’s side would then start to grow into the game, and could have had the second with an hour left. Wilshere’s dipping shoulder brought space to feed Merida, a thunderbolt from the Spanish play-maker had Kirkland scrambling.

With all the flair and creative talent in a red shirt, it was easy to forgot the role that Randall was playing. He was getting stuck in with firm sliding tackles and matching Palacios with two shoulder challenges, although his passing was suffering.

The second goal was getting closer and closer. Ramsey’s brilliance drew Wigan’s defence in, a toe poke down the wing sent Gibbs through unmarked, his left footed belter was straight at Kirkland.

Wilshere had now come inside to get more space to create mayhem, meaning he was susceptible to fouls via Palacios - which arrived within seconds of his switch to a new role.

Eventually, number two. Fabianski’s punch found Ramsey on the edge of the box. His long ball sent Vela away down the left, after Melchiot gave up, Vela was free, a simple cross picked out Simpson unmarked, he side footed into the empty net to make it 2-0 and seal the victory.

Goal - Jay Simpson (66)

Wigan were rocking, and just four minutes later it was 3-0.

Djourou stepped out from the back, his slide pass between the centre backs found Carlos Vela, the little Mexican held off Bramble before clipping a shot over the advancing Kirkland from the edge of the area. 3-0 and Vela’s 4th goal in 2 starts.

Goal - Carlos Vela (70)

As the visitors fell apart the Gunners turned on the style, and out came the tricks. Merida, Wilshere, Hoyte and Simpson all combined with a flowing move from defence to midfield, yet nothing productive came of
it. On 75 minutes Wenger rotated his deck.

Jay Simpson > Amaury Bischoff
Jack Wilshere > Henri Lansbury

Lansbury would replace Wilshere on the right hand side, Bischoff would now operate just behind
Vela on his Arsenal debut. The two subs worked a neat move down the wing, Vela just struggled to reach Henri’s square pass.

Vela signalled to the bench that he had a problem, and as a Mexican wave went around the Emirates, Rui Fonte replaced the third goalscorer.

Lansbury broke away yet again, with Bischoff in space calling for it, a lapse cross saw Fonte have a shot blocked. The one way traffic was broken up with an outstanding run from De Ridder, after Fabianski saved the first shot, the rebound was crashed under the bar by Zaki. Wigan believed it had crossed the line, replays showed Fabianski did enough to keep it out.

It finished 3-0, in a terrific win for Arsene Wenger’s Young Guns. They march on into round 5, knowing they are one of the most feared opponents around.

Good news, bad news

Man utd draw againts Everton, thanks to a header from the tall 19-years-old Fellaini.
The draw means that Arsenal could stay on top of Man utd for the rest of the week, it is a good news. Fellaini played really well againts Arsenal and Man utd ,he was a constant threat for the centre-backs because of his aerial ability and his height. I rate him highly from the two games I saw him played, but he still lacks the stamina to cope with the fast football of premier league. 16 million pounds? Is he worth it? Only time will tells.

Well the bad news is not that really bad, Hull managed to get an away win at WBA ,that's all. Superb performance from Almunia who kept Arsenal alive , made some crucial saves. Diaby also played very well , scored a good goal, that is why we missed him so much . A difficult place to go but Arsenal came on top. Shame on espn-star sport for not broadcasting it live.

Arsene Wenger’s line-up was very conservative. The same back four that finished out the Everton game were used while Robin van Persie was sacrificed to allow a five-man midfield which included Abou Diaby.

Expectedly, the atmosphere at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium was very comfortable - to be notoriously sarcastic. And that paid off for the home side when Almunia was called into action by running off his line to stop a potential goal-scoring opportunity for Fenerbahce with only four minutes played.

But the fanatic Istanbul crowd were calmed after just eleven minutes. First Emmanuel Adebayor - courtesy of Fabregas’ through-ball and Walcott’s little flick to let him off - met goalkeeper Demirel in close-range, and he coolly slid the ball past him into the right corner of the net. A minute later, Theo Walcott also took advantage of another intelligent pass from Fabregas and with the help of his pace, Walcott rounded off the keeper to give Arsenal an absolute dream-start against the odds in Turkey.

The hosts did make their response eight minutes after. A dully defended free kick was eventually tapped home to the side of Almunia by Mikael Silvestre. At 2-1, after just 20 minutes, many anticipated a thrilling Turkish night.

And the hype did not disappoint with yet again another turn-around three minutes after Fenerbahce’s goal. Abou Diaby held off two defenders on the left of the penalty box and finished with his left foot to restore Arsenal’s two-goal cushion. Both teams continued their clumsy defending, and at half-time, the scoreline should or could have been double what it read.

Four minutes after the second-half’s start, the match was left to the dead by a goal from Alex Song of all people. The Cameroonian fiercely volleyed home a lazily headed ball by Fenebahce’s defense. The Turks then mounted a surge for an astonishing comeback - which was somehow a good bet. After all Turkey is a nation of drama according to Euro 2008’s narrators.

Chances of that revenge were bettered when Daniel Guiza chipped over Almunia for a glimmer of hope at 4-2 after some unaware defending by Arsenal in the 77th minute. Theo Walcott and Emmanuel Adebayor were then replaced by Johan Djourou and Carlos Vela respectively.

Soon, it was into injury time and a fresh Gunner would enjoy a memorable fortune. Aaron Ramsey who had replaced the hardworking Abou Diaby precisely stroke from about 18 yards out to conclude a emphatic night.

Directed from arsenalspot.

Link:

8th nov could be the game of the season!

Remember2 the 8th of november.... Yess its the time 4 the big clash between 2 big teams which is ARSENAL and man u. There is a huge rivalry between the two teams from liong ago before i was born and i came to realise it during viera reign as the ARSENAL skipper. It was also the time when there is a rivalry between two superstars at midfield (roy keane & Patrik V) . Maybe this 8th of nov. i can see fabrigas split on c.ronaldo face. like he did it on ballack at the champ. league before he came to chelsea.

My pridiction will be as always an ARSENAL win 1-0

Arsenal 3-1 Everton

What a way to respond after the half-time break & what a comeback. It was a game of two halves and surely, the performance did enough to convince the gooners that arsenal can still challenge for the premiership.

But the bad news is that Toure picked up a knock and he will not be available for the upcoming champions league match. Nasri is ok and considered fit for that match and the other good news is that Diaby is back in the town!!!

And it was not much of a shock when Leon Osman started and finished a move that caught Arsenal careless. The English midfielder had set up Steven Pienaar on the left and the South African cut the ball lowly for Osman to guide it home with Song, Silvestre, Clichy and Almunia all stranded.

As usual, Arsenal made a deceiving response to the concession of that goal after just 8 minutes when Van Persie beat Lescott but saw his shot denied by Howard. With Arsenal’s opponents very well organized to stop them these days, Everton weren’t any different, and so the Gunners relied on Fabregas’ long balls which either caught an offside Adebayor or a bullied Van Persie.

Arsenal’s task to bounce back would have been deemed impossible had Clichy not been guarding the goal line to deny Lescott’s header which had beaten Almunia well enough. Wenger’s men later went into half-time only fancying a draw at most on the evidence of their last two league games.

Kolo Toure - the skipper for the day - was replaced for the second-half due to a shoulder problem while Theo Walcott was introduced. But quick moments after the restart, Arsenal really rode LUCK. Yakubu had shrugged off clumsy defending by Song to meet Almunia one-on-one, but Arsenal’s stopper was fortunately strong enough to disallow an embarrassing 0-2 deficit at home, and potentially an early call for ‘game over!’.

Soon after, a scrambled Arsenal corner-kick broke to Samir Nasri on the edge of the box, and the French youngster who had been anonymous as any other today stroke well to finally beat Tim Howard from 20 yards out.

Van Persie should have given Arsenal the lead when Eboue cut back a low cross to him, only to blast it into the stands with his right foot. But the Dutchman did make impressive amends the next time he was found in that area. Van Persie headed in from close-range as a rebound from Fabregas’ saved shot.

There was a showering relief sensed around the Emirates Stadium - most of it courtesy of Walcott’s introduction. Everton dared to push for an equalizer anyhow with the match now lacking it's intensity. A little injury worry for Samir Nasri meant he went-off for Abou Diaby to make his first appearance of the season.

And with minutes away from the final whistle, Theo Walcott capped off his effective impact with his first league goal on Arsenal’s ground. The high-paced English star drilled the ball home after a cut-back from fellow substitute Diaby and initiated a return to form for the Gunners. Prior to the clash, Wenger had labeled this match “the season opener” due to the interruptions of the international breaks and of course, some shameful hiccups. Much, much better than the Hull game. Van persie played brilliantly , scored a brace. As well Adebayor , who also scored twice . As well Walcott ,Fabregas ....etc. The point is the whole team played their part , except Denilson ,who was at times sloppy, giving the ball cheaply. But who cares , as long as the team wins. The Professor said it was the most complete game of the season so far, what more can I say. Btw Eboue showed his stepovers, waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy better than Robinho. Who needs Robinho when we've got Walcott?
Four nil? Boring , boring Arsenal.

good old arsenal, we're proud to say the name;
when we sing the song we'll win the game

Arsenal 1-2 Hull

Ok , things didnt turn out so well last night for Arsenal. After spending the majority of last season in the under-18s (still a massive step up for a then fifteen-year-old), Wilshere came to the fore after he set up Nacer Barazite and scored a spectacular goal himself in a 2-1 victory over West Ham reserves, in a match that was dubbed “The Jack Wilshere Show” . He posesses the ability to play all across the midfield though he is best suited to a central role.
Wilshere stepped up and had a brilliant pre-season with Arsenal, scoring a brace against Burgenland and then backing that up with a sublime volley against Stuttgart. Wilshere made his Arsenal debut off the bench against Blackburn Rovers and then scored in his second ever senior appearance, powering home with a low finish against Sheffield United. In recent months it has become obvious why Wilshere has drawn comparisons with Arsenal youth boss Liam Brady. Lets hope young Jack has the same amount of success for the Gunners as Chippy did.

Here is “The Jack Wilshere Show”.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bruneigunners.blogspot.com/2008/09/jack-wilshere-star-of-future.html' title='Jack Wilshere. Experience was added in the form of captain Lukasz Fabianski and defender Johan Djourou, but the average age was still under 20.

Fabianski (c)
Hoyte - Djourou - Song - Gibbs
Wilshere - Ramsey - Randall - Mérida
Bendtner - Vela

Subs - Mannone, Ogogo, Thomas, Frimpong, Coquelin, Lansbury, Simpson

Match Report - Arsenal 6-0 Sheffield United

Arsenal began the Carling Cup with firm expectations from this years tournament, although most commentator’s were all but ready to write us off with such a young team.

Fran Mérida’s first touch was to attempt a through ball for Vela, but the Spaniard got his angles wrong allowing Paddy Kenny the chance to come and claim.

Sheffield United began to try and put their foot in, and nearly managed to get in down the wing after confusion between Gibbs and Mérida. Ramsey, Randall and Wilshere were beginning well trying to control the play, and the early pressure nearly payed off.

Gibbs was put in by Mérida down the left, his fizzed cross was almost turned home by the arriving NicklasBendtner. Whilst United were showing their physical style, Randall showed the young Gunners would take nothing with a challenge on Nick Montgomery. Morgan would then flatten Ramsey after his neat touches, a physical battle was on the cards.

Danny Webber cut inside and fired a tame shot, an open start to proceedings at the Emirates. Fran won Arsenal a corner with some neat skills on the left, and following Randall’s delivery - Johan Djourou nearly managed to flick home.

Wilshere’s neat feet would then see him dance in field, but found a pass to the advancing Hoyte blocked by Gary Naysmith. A sloppy foul was then given away by Johan Djourou after he slipped up, but luckily the chance was wasted.

The Blades’ steel was seeing them just hold on against the slick Gunners, Halford first blocked Bendtner, and then a stunning run from Carlos Vela saw him create space until he was snuffed out.

Gibbs’ pace was causing problems for United, but still they were willing to be physical to stop the rampant youngsters. Ramsey was controlling play in the centre, yet it was his midfield partner Randall who had the next chance, curling a free kick over.

On 24 minutes the best opportunity of the game arrived, Djourou played a neat 1-2 with Wilshere on the right, and after Bendtner let the ball roll through his legs, Johan unleashed a fierce shot which was well tipped away by Kenny.

The attacks just kept coming at Sheffield, Mérida’s teased cross was flicked on by Bendtner for Wilshere, the 16-year-old twisted and turned but his effort was easy for the keeper’.

Vela had looked extremely impressive on the left hand side, and after turning on the gas he fed Bendtner, who unleashed a curling effort into the corner to hand Arsenal a lead on the half hour mark. A brilliant finish from the Danish forward to hand the home side a well deserved advantage.

Goal - Nicklas Bendtner (31)

Not content with one goal, immediately after the kick off possession was snatched back, Mérida and Bendtner created an opening for Ramsey who failed to get a shot away.

The visitors were being embarrassed by the Gunners’ kids, with the long ball creating the only chances for Beattie, who looked static and lazy in attack. Webber and Cotterill were brighter, however the latter was clipped down by Mérida with half time approaching.

After some good possession football from Sheffield United, Wilshere robbed the ball back and set out on a run which ended up in a corner. Mérida’s delivery was crashed away by Morgan, Djourou wasted the follow up.

Then, Bendtner and Ramsey played a double nutmeg on the edge of the box before supplying Wilshere, he went down but nothing was given. However, the second goal would follow, and it would be that man Bendtner again.

A superb dribble from Ramsey saw him create an angle to shoot - until he was forced away from goal, but he improvised and back-heeled a stunning through pass for Nicklas, who kept composed and finished confidently for the second.

Goal - Nicklas Bendtner - (42)

Cotterill threatened to cause mayhem after skipping forward, that seemed to anger the youngsters who hit back to seal the win. Carlos Vela was released, Chris Morgan tried to play offside, the flag never came, and the calm Mexican bagged his first goal for the Club.

Goal - Carlos Vela (44)

The half time whistle came as a welcome relief to the visitors, they had backed off and backed off and were punished by some delightful football from Arsenal.

Half Time - Arsenal 3-0 Sheffield United

The second half was all about keeping the ball and trying to draw the visitors out before punishing them, something Gibbs nearly did after a sequence of 20 passes, but Kenny saved well.

More goals were imminent - and Carlos Vela would not disappoint. A clipped ball over the top from Gibbs sent the 19-year-old through, and as Kenny advanced Vela controlled beautifully before lobbing the stopper with a stunning finish.

Goal - Carlos Vela (50)

Shouts of ‘Ole’ rang around the Emirates as the Gunners moved the ball delightfully, quick feet from Vela nearly created the 5th, but although that chance didn’t go in, the 5th goal was would follow.

Jack Wilshere received a short corner on the edge of the box, he took a touch before smashing a low effort into the corner to punish some slack marking. A terrific goal from the 16-year-old, who becomes the second youngest goalscorer for the Club.

Goal - Jack Wilshere - (57)

A shot and a header nearly gave Gibbs the chance to add his name to the ever expanding score sheet, but good keeping from Kenny denied the full back.

Fran looked back to his exceptional best, his lovely ball nearly saw Bendtner complete his hat-trick, the Danish hit-man only just failed to convert. Everybody was pulling together to help finish off United, if this was a fight it would have been stopped a very long time ago.

Bendtner and Mérida worked an intelligent opening for Vela, Kenny was again called into action. Alex Song received a bang on his hip and was forced off, Pat Rice got his notebook out and began to reshuffle the side.

Henri Lansbury > Alex Song
Jay Simpson > Nicklas Bendtner ——– (70)
Francis Coquelin > Fran Mérida

All the changes meant the following team would complete the game.

Fabianski
Coquelin - Hoyte - Djourou - Gibbs
Lansbury - Randall - Ramsey - Wilshere
Simpson - Vela

James Beattie scuffed a rare effort wide, then Greg Halford lashed into the stand. Sheffield United looked uninterested as the game progressed, the two shots summed that up.

Brave defending from Djourou denied Quinn’s shot, the perfect way to celebrate his new contract. Then, Coquelin’s explosive run set up Lansbury, the England Under 19 skipper worked Kenny once more.

A clever back heel from the talented Randall was inches away from sending Simpson through, Jay would see a shot charged down minutes later. The changes had killed the fixture off, but Ramsey was still alive enough to smash an effort wide, he was nothing short of brilliant this evening.

Ramsey would then burst out of midfield, Vela and Simpson made runs around the corner, Aaron rolled Carlos in, who smashed the ball under Kenny for 6-0.

Goal - Carlos Vela (87)
